5 Ways to Prolong the Life of Your Air Conditioning Unit

Here in the Treasure Valley, we know how punishing a Boise summer and late spring can be.

When temperatures push past 100°F in July and August, your air conditioning unit isn’t just a luxury — it’s a lifeline. At Gem Heating and Air Conditioning, we’ve been keeping Boise families cool for years, and one of the most common questions we hear is: “How do I make my AC last longer?” Being that

The good news is that with a little attention and routine care, you can add years to your system’s life and avoid the dreaded mid-summer breakdown. Here are five proven ways to protect your investment.

1. Change Your Air Filter Regularly

This one sounds simple — because it is. Yet it’s also the most overlooked maintenance task we see. A dirty or clogged air filter forces your AC system to work much harder than it needs to, putting unnecessary strain on the motor and compressor. Over time, that extra strain adds up and shortens the life of your unit significantly.

We recommend checking your filter every 30 days and replacing it at least every 1–3 months, depending on how much you run your system and whether you have pets. In Boise’s dusty, high-desert climate, filters tend to clog faster than you might expect — especially during the windy spring months. A fresh filter is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to keep your system running efficiently for the long haul.

2. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clean and Clear

Your outdoor condenser unit works hard to release heat from inside your home — but it can only do that job well if it has room to breathe. Overgrown shrubs, grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, and debris can restrict airflow and cause the unit to overheat.

Make it a habit to clear at least two feet of space around the unit at all times. Gently rinse the fins with a garden hose a few times each season to remove built-up dirt and debris — just be careful not to bend the delicate fins. If you notice the fins are already bent, our technicians at Gem can straighten them with a fin comb during a routine service visit. A clean, unobstructed condenser runs cooler and lasts longer.

3. Schedule Annual Professional Maintenance

Just like your car needs an oil change, your AC system needs a professional tune-up once a year — ideally in the spring before the Boise heat kicks in. During a maintenance visit, a certified Gem technician will inspect and clean the coils, check refrigerant levels, test electrical connections, lubricate moving parts, and make sure everything is operating at peak efficiency.

Catching small issues early — a slightly low refrigerant charge, a worn capacitor, a loose wire — can mean the difference between a quick, inexpensive fix and a costly emergency repair in the middle of August. Routine maintenance is the single best investment you can make in the longevity of your system.

4. Use a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

One of the biggest contributors to premature AC wear is simply running the system more than necessary. When your unit cycles on and off repeatedly throughout the day, each startup puts stress on the compressor — and the compressor is the most expensive component in the system.

A programmable or smart thermostat lets you set your home to a higher temperature while you’re away at work and cool back down before you return, so the system isn’t working full-tilt all day long. Boise’s warm evenings also offer a great opportunity to use a whole-house fan or open windows overnight, giving your AC a rest. Reducing unnecessary run time is one of the most effective ways to extend your unit’s lifespan.

5. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs

Your air conditioner will usually tell you when something is wrong — if you know what to listen for. Unusual noises like grinding, squealing, or banging, warm air blowing from the vents, unexplained spikes in your energy bill, or ice forming on the refrigerant lines are all signs that something needs attention.

The worst thing you can do is ignore these warning signs and keep running the system. What might start as a minor issue can quickly escalate into major component failure if left unchecked. At Gem Heating and Air Conditioning, we’re just a call away. Addressing problems early keeps repair costs down and your system running strong for years to come.
